Perkins' "Timeless" dance recital bridges past with present
NORWICH - Amber Perkins School of the Arts students rehearsed three days this week in preparation for the annual recital entitled, “Timeless.” The title bridges the past with the present in a collection of unique, original performances that combine classic themes, electrifying sound, striking costumes and thrilling choreography.
Senior dancers’ performances are at 7 p.m. Friday, June 9 and Saturday, June 10 at the Norwich High School auditorium, Midland Drive, Norwich. Junior dancers will perform matinees at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 10 and Sunday, June 11.
The various numbers in both the junior and senior shows cover a wide array of themes. There are classics like “Bolero,” a duet performed by the Elyse Young and her partner, Dancer of the Year Travis St. Denny. This piece plays upon the intertwining rhythms and emotional interpersonal connections associated with a traditional Spanish form of partner dance.
Another ageless piece is the junior production number, William Shakespeare’s classic, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” This piece takes the audience on a magical, ethereal journey through an enchanted forest complete with a fairy queen, fireflies, star-crossed lovers and Shakespeare’s famously quirky, mischievous and sprightly character, Puck.
